podcasting

How much do I earn from podcasts?

Podcasts are a popular way of making money, which, if done professionally, can bring in a handsome profit. It is not a simple method. It requires a well thought out strategy, calculating statistics and creating interesting material. The potential for good monetization format is obvious.

Donations

Donations are voluntary payments by users to the authors of podcasts. You can use many payment options, like the Patreon platform, the PayPal option and other payment services. The first of the above-mentioned methods is popular. The Patreon platform was developed for creators of various content, including podcasts. The scheme for obtaining profit is simple:

  • registration on the service;
  • placement of interesting material;
  • Appeal to users to reward you financially.

On Patreon, the user sets the amount of the donation himself. It can be symbolic – from 1 euro per month, but with popular authors the remuneration starts from 50 euro. Those who donate funds are granted patron status. They get access to expanded content, such as material not included in the issue or access to offline events.

The economics of podcasting

Embedded monetisation

Platform advertisers (Anchor, Castbox, Spotify, etc.) offer to supplement content with embedded spots. These tell a story about a particular product or service. The creator’s task is to seamlessly integrate the information into the podcast without alienating the viewer. This type of sponsorship is based on the CPM model, i.e. payment varies based on 1,000 clicks. The rate per thousand clicks is set by each advertiser.

The Castbox platform introduces podcast monetization. Paywall is a relevant earning model. Authors provide individual content for a financial reward. The method is popular with celebrity podcasters who are not afraid of losing their audience after introducing “information rubbish”.

Spotify offers an interesting way to make money. Users are shown a link to the advertiser directly as they browse the content. Other features of the service include audio advertising. This option is available in the United States and Germany.

Affiliate Networks (CPA)

Affiliate networks are quickly gaining popularity. They are characterized by the following advantages:

  • independent choice of the authors of the marketing object;
  • no money risks, because the payment is made in advance;
  • the ability to advertise multiple products or services in a single prompt;
  • the minimum threshold of accession (even novice authors are accepted).

Among the disadvantages of this type of monetisation are the long lead times for receiving money. It is a physically costly way to make a profit, requiring testing of offers and formats. The principle of the CPA is clear. The issue provides information about the marketing target and the affiliate link. The income is based on the number of clicks.

The earnings on podcasts vary. If you are new to the segment, you should not expect to make much profit. It will grow gradually with the audience and skill level of ad content integration. Experienced authors earn several thousand euros per issue, while novice podcasters can easily earn 100-200 euros per month in the first month.
